Scientific Rationale

John F. W. Herschel, observing from the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, first described the belt of bright stars which is marked out by the constellations of Orion, Canis Major, Puppis, Vela, Carina, Centaurus, Lupus, and Scorpio. The Gould's belt is the subject of astronomical research since its discovery in 19th century until now, when satellite HERSCHEL discovers detailes of its structure. The Gould's belt and similar large scale star forming structures in the Milky Way and other galaxies provide the connection of the star formation of the sub-parsec small scale with spiral arms and other kiloparsec large scale features in galaxies. The connection bettween small and large scale shown by the Gould's belt and beyond will be the focus of this workshop.
